One in every four Australians are born overseas. The Australian Constitution protects an individual’s right to freely practice their religion.
With 37 government-funded universities and two private universities, as well as a number of other specialist institutions Australia offers courses that are approved and much sought after. The University of Sydney is Australia’s oldest university, having been founded in 1850, followed by the University of Melbourne three years later.
Most students are looking for tangible work experience to add to their set of skills as part of education in Australia. Australia understands this cardinal need and has made various policies to support this.
A full-time International student can work part-time as per the given guidelines.
A full-time degree student can work up to 40 hours fortnightly during term-time and full-time during vacations.
A full-time student can also work on a work placement as part of the course.
A student can earn from $16 – $25 per hour i.e. $1,280 – $2,000 per month.
After the successful completion of a Bachelors or Masters a student can apply for a 2 year Post-Study Work Permit.

HEALTH INSURANCE
Evidence of adequate health insurance. Health insurance must be Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
You must obtain OSHC from at least one week before your course starts and for the duration of your stay in Australia.
If you have organized OSHC, include the name of your health insurance provider, the dates your policy starts and finishes and the policy number in your application form.
If the education provider arranged your OSHC, you will need to include the name of your health insurance provider and the dates your policy starts and finishes. You do not need to include the policy number in your application.
EVIDENCE OF FINANCIAL CAPACITY
You must provide either:
- sufficient funds to cover your travel costs and 12 months of living and tuition
- evidence that your spouse or parents are willing to support you and they have an annual income of at least AUD 60,000 for single students or at least AUD 70,000 for students that are accompanied by family members
It can include the following
- deposits of money from a financial institution
- government loans or loans from a financial institution
- scholarships or similar financial support
The Financial Evidence should show that you have enough money to pay for:
- your travel
- 12 months of your course fees (or pro rata fees, if your course is less than 12 months)
- 12 months of living costs for you and any family members who come with you to Australia (or pro rata fees, if you are staying less than 12 months)
- school fees for any school-age children who accompany you (or pro rata fees, if the child will be at school for less than 12 months)
If someone else is providing you funds, give us:
- evidence of your relationship with them
- their identity documents
- evidence of any financial support they have given you or another student visa holder in the past
- If the financial support provided involves a business, show us proof the business is operating.
- If you are providing evidence of deposits of money, explain their source.
Any education loan to cover your tuition or living costs should be paid out according to the agreement between you, the bank and the education provider. If you receive any payments before we make a decision on your application, give us evidence including the terms of the loan and the full amount you will be paid.
If you are relying on another kind of loan, provide:
- evidence of the security you used
- the terms of the loan
- evidence you can cover ongoing costs
EVIDENCE OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
This must be evidence that you have either obtained a satisfactory test score in an English language test that has been approved by us or evidence of certain eligible studies in English or if you fall into an exemption category.
GENUINE TEMPORARY ENTRANT REQUIREMENT
Evidence to show that you meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement for a student visa. This must include a statement in your application form that you intend to stay in Australia temporarily and/or documentation to support claims.
Include evidence such as:
- Proof of employment –attach pay-slips or a contract, Curriculum Vitae or Resume.
- Qualifications – A certified copy of your academic transcripts, Educational Certificate (Degree, Diploma etc)
Write the statement carefully keeping the following I mind:
Previous study
- Academic transcripts showing qualifications achieved
- Name of the education provider(s)
- Length of study
- Certificates of attainment
Gap in previous study
- Reasons why there is a gap in your studies including where you did not maintain enrolment
Current employment
- Your current employer
- Company address
- Period of employment
- Details of your position
- The name and contact details of someone who can confirm the circumstances of your employment
Ties to home country or country of residence
- Evidence of financial, family or social ties. You need to show you have significant incentives to return home
Economic situation in home country or country of residence
- Documents showing employment or business activities for 12 months before lodging an application
- Potential employment offers including salary and other benefits, after course completion
- Income tax return or bank statements

Include as much information and evidence as possible in your GTE statement to help give us a full view of your situation. This will help us make a decision on your student visa application. Otherwise, we might need to ask you for more information, delaying our decision on your visa application.

Translate
Have all non-English documents translated into English.
Translators outside Australia do not have to be accredited. But on each translation, they must include their:
- full name
- address and telephone number
- qualifications and experience in the language they are translating
These details must be in English.
Note: You do not need to have any documents certified.
Scan or photograph
Scan or photograph all documents (English and non-English) in colour.
The scans and photos must be legible.
If a document is more than 1 page, save it all as 1 file.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES
The requirements may vary depending on the level of education you want to study.
English language requirements
Applicants are required to provide results of an English language test. The English language skill level might defer from one institution to another or depending on the desired program.
Applicants who completed a 1-2 year Academic studies in English will not be required to provide evidence of English language skill and will be able to enter the program directly.
Academic requirements
For undergraduate courses, students are required to have an Australian senior secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent.
For Postgraduate courses students are required to have an Australian Bachelor’s degree, or graduate diploma/graduate certificate from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum credit (65 per cent).
Qualifications awarded outside Australia can also be used for admission but equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
GPA:
The GPA scale defers from one Institution to another and can be different from one country to another, thus, the GPA measure might be imprecise and the Australian educational system will assess applicants GPA based on the educational institution and country previous studies and qualification completed.
Evidence of funds:
Applicants must be aware of the financials and the cost when choosing Australia as their destination of study, applicants will be required to have access to funds including full year of tuition fees, (1) year of living expenses and an overseas health cover plus a 2 ways home flight tickets.

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement
The GTE form means a person who satisfies the genuine temporary entrant criterion for student visa. Student Visa applications requires the applicant to support and satisfy the intention to genuinely stay in Australia temporarily.
A form must be completed by applicants (Students) supporting a genuine intention to temporarily enter and remain in Australia for Educational causes only.
The Applicant’s Circumstances
- Applicant must show reasons for not undertaking the study in their home country or region.
- Applicants personal ties to their home country (Family, Employment Etc.)
- Economic circumstances of the applicant that would present as significant incentive for the applicant no to return to their home country.
- Military service commitments, if part of the country rules, presents as a significant incentive for the applicant no to return to their home country.
- Political and civil unrest in the applicant’s home country.
The applicant’s potential circumstances in Australia
- Evidence that the student visa program is being used to circumvent the intentions of the migration programme
- Whether the student visa or Student Guardian visa is being used to maintain ongoing residence
- Whether the primary and secondary applicant(s) have entered into a relationship of concern for a successful student visa outcome.
Where a decision maker determines that an applicant and dependant have contrived their relationship for a successful Student visa outcomes, the decision maker may find that both applicants do not satisfy the genuine temporary entrant criterion.
GENUINE TEMPORARY ENTRANT
The GTE means a person who satisfies the genuine temporary entrant criterion for University admission and visa purposes. A form must be completed by applicants (Students) supporting a genuine intention to temporarily enter and remain in Australia for Educational purposes only.
GTE for Admissions Purposes
The genuine temporary entrant is used by the University and Institutions admissions to identify applicants using the student visa program for motives other than gaining quality education.
Some of the factors that are being considered by University admissions when assessing the genuineness of an applicant:
- The value of the course to the applicant’s future and relevance of chosen course to future career and educational plans
- Previous academic studies and qualification help in assessing the student’s genuineness based on the relevance of your course of studies and to the academic or employment background. Applicant may not be considered genuine when applying for a less educational level than previous awarded degree
- Evidence of funds, Applicants must be aware of the financials and the cost when choosing Australia as their destination of study. Applicants will be required to have access to funds including (1) full year of tuition fees, (1) year of living expenses and a (1) year health cover.
- Evidence of English language proficiency must be submitted. The test must have been taken no more than two years before the student visa application is made
- Applicant(student) should have No time gaps between previous studies and current study application or a time gap between employment and study application.
- When applying for a student visa, applicants main intention needs to be completing desired program and return to use the gained knowledge and skills at home country

- The extent of the applicants personal ties to their home country (Family, EmploymentEtc.). Applicant must provide strong evidence to go back home for either work purposes or family.
- Economic circumstances of the applicant that would present as significant incentive for the applicant not to return to their home country.
- Military service commitments that would present as a significant incentive for the applicant no to return to their home country.
- Political and civil unrest in the applicant’s home country.

Academic requirements
The academic requirements (including evidence of English language skills) you need to study in Australia depends on the level of education you want to study. Institutions have different entry requirements.
Here is some general guidance on entry requirements for the different levels of study:
- English language– Entry requirements vary between institutions, and according to the level of English language course you want to study.
- Schools– Entry requirements vary between schools depending on the state or territory you will be studying in. Academic performance and ability is considered during the application process.
- Vocational education and training– In most cases there are no entrance exams for VET institutions. However, some courses may have specific pre-requisite subjects or work experience requirements.
- Higher Education Undergraduate– To gain entry into an Australian undergraduate course you will need to have an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent. Some undergraduate courses may also have specific pre-requisite subjects.
- Higher Education Postgraduate– As well as the satisfactory completion of at least one degree at undergraduate level, your institution may take research ability or relevant work experience into consideration.
- FOUNDATION COURSE – To meet the academic requirements of an Australian high school qualification, a Foundation course can be undertaken. It is also called bridging stud and are intensive courses that help meet the entry requirements. They are usually one year long and are offered by most higher education institutions.
VISA REQUIREMENTS
The student visa you need depends on your chosen course of study. As a guide, the typical key requirements you will need to meet are:

Overseas Student Health Cover
Australia has a special system of health cover for international students called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). It will help you pay for medical or hospital care you may need while you’re studying in Australia; it will also contribute towards the cost of most prescription medicines and an ambulance in an emergency. When studying in Australia, you will need OSHC for yourself, and any family travelling with you, before you arrive. It is a requirement of your student visa that you maintain OSHC for the duration of your time on a student visa in Australia.
