ABOUT US

Victoria University achieved university status in 1991, but our preceding institutions date back to 1916. We are one of Australia’s few dual-sector universities. Today, we have over 40,000 enrolled higher education, and vocational education and training students studying on our campuses.

For more than 100 years, Victoria University (VU) has offered accessible education to students in Melbourne’s west and beyond.

With 28 research disciplines ranked at or above world standard in the latest Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) assessments, VU offers world-class research opportunities.

Our researchers work across multidisciplinary research focus areas to develop new technologies and solve real world problems. Research is supported by our partnerships with industry and our research institutes and centres to provide beneficial outcomes to organisations, governments and communities.

VU is one of the largest and the most culturally diverse institutions in Australia. We have more than 14,000 international students enrolled with us with 7,400 with 11 overseas partner universities.

Ranking

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 (and previously in 2017–19), VU was ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide.

In 2019, we were also ranked equal 51st among more than 300 universities in the Times Higher Education Asia–Pacific University Ranking(external link).

In the 2019 ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (also known as Shanghai Jiao Tong Ranking) VU is ranked in six subject areas in 2019, with two subject areas ranking in the top 50 in the world.

VU researchers were recognised for their global standing in the latest Australian Research Council Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results.

VU achieved:

• the highest rating of 5 (well above world standard) in six research areas
• a rating of 4 (above world standard) in nine areas
• a rating of 3 (world standard) in thirteen areas.
