About Newcastle

The history of the University of Newcastle, as for all great universities, has been characterised by leaders who have been willing to challenge the status quo and transform fields of education and research.

Since its foundation, the staff, students and leaders of the University have introduced unique ways of thinking and operating that have led to remarkable outcomes.

The University of Newcastle began as a college of the University of New South Wales. It opened in late 1951 and accepted its first students in 1952.

Newcastle International College (NIC)

NIC is your pathway to a degree at the University of Newcastle. The Foundation Program (FP) leads to over 60 undergraduate degrees, including Medicine. NIC Diploma programs are equivalent to the first year of a Bachelor’s degree and graduates of the Diploma enter Year 2 of the degree program.

If you are not eligible for direct entry to the University of Newcastle, you could still be eligible for an NIC pathway course leading to your chosen degree. Letters of Offer are packaged with both the NIC and UoN program, so you only need to make one application and your student visa, if approved, will allow you to study both courses.

ON CAMPUS

Student Living is UON’s award-winning accommodation precinct at Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses and is home to over 1800 students from all over the world. Our nine residences offer a variety of living options to suit our student community.

OFF CAMPUS

If you want to live off-campus, there are lots of options for you close to the University including rooms, apartments and houses. UON offers a free off-campus accommodation service that is here to help you find the perfect place to live while you study.

HOMESTAY

Some families who live near the university host students in their homes for short or long stays. The University arranges each Homestay to ensure that all homes and host families are safe and friendly.
