BIRKBECK UNIVERSITY
ADVANTAGE BIRKBECK
Many organisations do not survive 200 years, but even fewer do so in a manner that their founders would recognise.
Since Dr George Birkbeck created the London Mechanics’ Institution in 1823, the organisation that is now Birkbeck, University of London, has been the gateway for ambitious people to study in the evening. In doing so they change their own lives – and have an immediate impact on business, the economy and our entire society.
Established in 1823 to educate working Londoners, Birkbeck remains true to its original mission. For nearly two centuries it has offered a unique way to study, with evening lectures making it possible for students to work, or pursue other daytime commitments, while they learn. Whilst 35% of the College’s students are full-time, it continues to be a leading proponent of and advocate for part-time, higher education.
There are lots of great reasons to study at Birkbeck, and here are just a few:
- We are part of the world-famous University of London.
 - We have two campuses: one in the heart of academic London in Bloomsbury, and the other in the creative hub of Stratford, east London.
 - We award internationally recognised University of London qualifications.
 - We are one of the world’s leading research universities, with a vibrant community of researchers.
 - Our teaching is in the evenings, so your days are free to study, work, intern or do your own thing.
 - You will be studying alongside, and networking with, London’s working professionals.
 - Birkbeck’s classrooms are a true melting pot, filled with diverse people of different backgrounds, different ages and different career and life stages.
 - We are a truly global university, with students from over 120 countries.
 - We offer comprehensive careers, English language, study skills and other support.

Birkbeck is nearly 200 years old: we were established in 1823, to give working Londoners access to higher education.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
POSTGRADUATE DEGREES
For most Master’s degrees, we require the equivalent of a UK Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree (class 2:1 or 2:2, with honours). You must also meet our minimum English language entry requirements.
- Applicants will normally be required to achieve a first-class/first division mark in their undergraduate programme at a good institution of higher education in India. At the discretion of academic departments, students with degrees awarded by top universities such as the University of Mumbai, University of Delhi, University of Calcutta, Indian Institute of Technology and University of Pune, may be accepted with high second-class/high second division marks.
- For programmes requiring a UK 2:1: first-class degree, 60% or equivalent. Students with a high second-class degree, 55%+ or equivalent, from one of the top institutions may also be considered at the discretion of the department.
 - For programmes requiring a UK 2:2: high second-class degree, 55% or equivalent. Students below this mark who have attended one of the top institutions may be considered at the discretion of the department.

 - UK NARIC advises that a new 10-point GPA scale has been introduced in many universities. The figures below can be used to compare GPA score to percentage scores:

 - If you do not meet these criteria, you can apply for Birkbeck’s International Foundation Programme, which acts as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate study, preparing students to study a Master’s degree in the UK. There are progression pathways onto various courses at Birkbeck.
 - Another option is the Master’s Foundation programme, which is available for 2- or 3-term progression onto a wide range of Master’s degrees at Birkbeck.
